    It is closely related with differential topology and with the geometric aspects of the theory of differential equations. The first 8 chapters present the key ideas of topology and differential geometry. Another is that the universe is a 3-torus, in which if you were to fix time and trace out a line away from any point along the x, y or z-axis, you traverse a circle and come right back to where you started. If it has non-trivial deformations, the structure is said to be flexible, and its study is geometry.

    It is highly desirable that the study of the geometry of Euclidean 3-space should thus come first, and this can be undertaken with most students at an earlier stage by vector methods than by the Ricci calculus. For a modern reader, reading the classical texts therefore presents quite a challenge. With the methods of Apollonius and a few infinitesimals, an inspired geometer showed that the laws regarding both area and ellipse can be derived from the suppositions that bodies free from all forces either rest or travel uniformly in straight lines and that each planet constantly falls toward the Sun with an acceleration that depends only on the distance between their centres.

    I’ve lately been doing some research in the general area of geometric PDEs inspired by the intricate theory of minimal and constant mean curvature surfaces.
